Calumet hockey blanks Negaunee
CALUMET — The Calumet Copper Kings looked strong in their first action since the MIHL Showcase with an 8-0 blanking of the visiting Negaunee Miners Thursday night at the Calumet Colosseum.
It took the Copper Kings 8 minutes, 27 seconds, and a major power play to break through on Miners goaltender Preston Maki. Brent Loukus gave Calumet the lead with the goal. He scored twice more before the night was over.
Still on the major power play, Davin Lehto gave the Copper Kings (15-6-1 overall, 8-1 GLHC) a two-goal lead at 9:05.
Loukus’ second, which came at 15:48, was also on the power play.
Assistant captain Ed Beiring struck at the 7:53 mark of the second, sparking a run of five goals in a span of 5:21.
Captain Rory Anderson and Matthew Yeo struck 17 seconds apart to put Calumet up 6-0. Loukus’ hat trick goal came on the power play at 11:03.
Beiring netted his second of the night at 13:12 shorthanded to send the crowd home early.
Alex Studebaker made 10 stops to earn the win.
Calumet is off until Tuesday, when they face the Houghton Gremlins at the Calumet Colosseum.
