Houghton boys mount comeback against Kingsford

HOUGHTON — Despite a poor start, the Houghton Gremlins rallied past their future first-round district opponent by defeating the Kingsford Flivvers 43-40 Thursday in a nonconference game in Houghton.

The Gremlins (4-10) fell behind 14-1 as Kingsford (1-15) was rolling.

“At that point, you could feel the helium had left the balloon for our team,” Houghton head coach Jared Lawson said. “But credit to our guys. They stormed back into the game on a 17-2 run that was ignited with more tenacity on the defensive end.”

Bradley Sirard recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to go along with his game-saving block. With Houghton hanging onto a three-point lead, Kingsford’s Tyler Beauchamp launched a 3, only to see Sirard tally one of his four blocks on the night.

“Good win for our guys against a well-coached Kingsford team,” Lawson said. “Should be an exciting first-round district game.”

Houghton’s George Butvilas also chipped in with 14 points.

Next, the Gremlins go to Escanaba tonight.
