Hancock beats WIC in finale; Calumet West-PAC champions

HANCOCK — The Hancock Bulldogs did their rival a favor Friday night.

With Hancock’s 59-46 West-PAC win over the West Iron County Wykons, the Calumet Copper Kings are now the lone winners of the regular season West-PAC title. The Copper Kings (14-6) closed the season with a 6-2 West-PAC record, while the loss drops WIC to 5-3 in the conference.

It’s the first time in four years that someone besides the Houghton Gremlins has captured the West-PAC title.

Hancock’s Reece Anderson led the way with 17 points, while Hancock’s Chad Raasio added 11 points after being named West-PAC Co-Player of the Year with West Iron County’s A.J. Weisnicht, who finished with 12 points.

After trailing 13-10 after the first, Hancock outscored WIC over the final three quarters and managed to take a 40-29 lead into the fourth after a stifling defensive effort in the second and third quarters where the Bulldogs allowed just 16 points.

Next, Hancock goes to Ironwood on Monday for a district semifinal matchup.
