Two of the area’s top scoring guards were honored by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. Hancock’s Maija Sebbas and L’Anse’s Bailey Froberg were each named to the Class ABC All-U.P. Second Team Wednesday by the UPSSA.

Sebbas averaged the third-most points in the area (17.6) while also averaging 5 rebounds.

This past season, Sebbas achieved two milestones: 1,000-career points, and the all-time Hancock 3-point record with 116 3s.

Sebbas didn’t find out she broke the school’s 3-point record until after the season at the team’s basketball banquet.

“It’s a pretty cool feeling that I left somewhat of a mark on the school,” Sebbas said. “I honestly never would have thought that I would set the school record, but even better because it caught me off guard and it wasn’t anything I was aiming to accomplish throughout my career.

“It’s also really cool because it shows that hard work pays off, and having a team full of freshman this last year, I think it kind of shows them that things like that can happen if you put in the time.”

Sebbas’ finest moment came when she led Hancock past L’Anse, 54-43, in a Class C district semifinal on Feb. 28. She scored 31 points and reached the 1,000-point mark while putting her team in the district final.

L’Anse’s Forberg — along with Jeffers’ Julia Nordstrom — has the distinction of scoring 36 points in a single game, which is the highest for a local girl this season. Froberg scored her 36 in an 82-60 win over the Wakefield-Marenisco Cardinals on Jan. 24, where she displayed her outside shooting prowess as she knocked down eight 3-pointers. And against a stingy Houghton Gremlins team that allowed just 39 points per game on the season, Froberg scored 24 points in another impressive outing.

For the season, Froberg averaged 16.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.5 steals.

Both Sebbas and Forberg will continue their careers at the collegiate level, with Sebbas going to Mid Michigan Community College and Froberg attending Gogebic Community College.

Houghton’s Tawna Ryynanen was Special Mention, while Houghton’s Kara Pietila received Honorable Mention.
