Gremlins place second, Copper Kings’ girls take fourth, in Marquette

MARQUETTE — When track coaches choose to experiment with their teams, you never know what they might find.

Such was the case for Houghton boys’ coach Dan Junttila and his staff as they elected to enter junior Clayton Sayen in the 200-meter dash for the first time in Tuesday’s Marquette Invitational at Northern Michigan University’s Superior Dome.

It worked like a charm as Sayen won that race in 23.66 seconds and was followed by Sault Ste. Marie senior Ryan Jones (24.04) and Marquette’s Ethan Martysz (24.31).

“We did a lot of experimenting today,” said Junttila. “We knew Clayton was a good middle distance runner, but we didn’t know he had that much speed.”

Marquette captured the title with 153 points, followed by Houghton 97 and Kingsford 53.

Sayen also took the 400 at 53.34, followed by Marquette’s Julien Malherbe (55.5) and Matt Millado (56.04).

“I thought I was pretty slow coming out of the blocks (in the 400),” said Sayen. “I ran my second best 800 time (in the 3200 relay) and my legs were a little tired. I’m pleased with my time. I’m further along than I was at this time last year. This gives you a little better feel for where you’re at before the outdoor season.”

The Gremlins also copped the 1600 relay (3:44.61).

Houghton’s Casey Lentowich was runner-up in the 55-meter hurdles (8.78) by a half-second to Marquette’s Drew Thomas, and Seth Helman added a second in the 1600 (4:47.4).

Taking third for Houghton were Leif Odegard in the 800 (2:10.24) and Dave Daavettila in pole vault at 10 feet, six inches.

“I thought the meet was very well run,” said Junttila. “It’s nice to have indoor meets up here. I like the idea of them holding an open 200 and 800. It gives the kids a chance to compete and get an official time. In all the years we’ve been coming here (since the early 1990s), we finally won the shot put shuffle for the first time.”

The Houghton girls were runners-up to Marquette by five points (73-68). Third-place Kingsford scored 59 1/2 points.

Houghton junior Kendra Monette won shot put (37-8) and was runner-up in the 55 (7.72) and 200 (28.53).

“This first couple throws weren’t as good as a I hoped,” said Monette. “My legs were fatigued after the 55 (dash) and 800 relay, but I was still able to throw reasonably well. I was also a little nervous at first because I wasn’t sure what the competition would be like.”

Sloane Zenner added a second in the 400 (1:06.7) and shared third in high jump (4-6) with Gladstone junior Sydney Mills and Negaunee’s Chloe Norman.

Calumet senior Hailey Wickstrom won high jump (4-10) with Houghton junior Cara Monette runner-up (4-8).

“It went pretty good for the first meet,” said Wickstrom. “I didn’t have the best practice yesterday (Monday), but I came in here with a positive attitude. You just run fast and jump high. It’s a big mental thing.”

Calumet also got a first on Kierra Mayotte’s leap of 7-6 1/2 in pole vault, a half-inch better than Escanaba’s Katilyn Lord and Marquette’s Erica Asmus.

“I’m happy for Kierra,” said Wickstrom. “She has been working so hard. I’m happy to see her get rewarded.”
