Mattila takes pair of games from two opponents in close fashion
Mattila Rock and Dock captured a doubleheader from Friday night in Copper Country Women’s Softball League action.
Mattila R&D used solid pitching by Mel Baker to take the opener over Superior National Bank by a 4-1 score.
They then unloaded the timber in the second game for a 10-9 victory over Calumet-Loading Zone at the Chassell Field.
Manager Diane Mattila credited Baker with a good performance on the mound in the opening game.
“Mel really pitched a fine game,” Mattila said. “They (SNB) had runners on, but she pitched out of trouble. And our defense was pretty good, too.”
After taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning, Mattila R&D scored three times in the third inning for a 4-0 margin.
SNB starting hurler Larissa Anderson had to be taken out of the game in the third inning because of an injury.
Superior National held a 7-6 hit advantage.
In the nightcap, Mattila R&D scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a single by Shantel Lorenz.
The two teams traded the lead back and forth for the entire game, according to Diane Mattila.
“It was a hitters game,” Mattila said.
“Both teams hit the ball hard.”
Darla Mensch had a big game for the winners, driving in three runs with three hits. including a triple and double. Lorenz picked two hits.
Collecting three hits each for Calumet-Loading Zone were Jada Riutta and Kait DeMars. Riutta also rapped out a double.
Martti Jahfetson was the winning pitcher, while Ellie Bjorn took the loss.
Mattila improved to 3-2 for the season.
