Finlandia volleyball loses to Northland

HANCOCK — Three players with at least 13 kills was not enough as the Finlandia University volleyball team (3-7) lost 3-2 (20-25, 25-19, 17-25, 15-19, 15-11) to Northland College (3-6), Wednesday night at the Paavo Nurmi Center.

In the opening set, Finlandia jumped out to a 10-4 early lead. Northland College went on 6-1 run to close to 11-10.

The Lions looked to be in charge with a lead of 19-13. The Lumberjills fought back to narrow the gap to 21-19. An error and a bomb from junior Shannon Anderson paved the way for victory.

In the second set, NC scored the first six points and never looked back.

In the third set, FinnU led for all of the first half but couldn’t shake Northland College. At 12-9, junior Marina Dalton served up four straight points that finally broke the charge.

In the fourth set, the Lumberjills jumped out to an 8-2 early lead. Finlandia got a kill from freshman Kaisa Holmstrom. That made it 9-8.

The teams traded points until 14-13. NC then went on a 7-1 burst that forced a fifth set.

In the deciding set, the squads went back-and-forth until 6-6. Northland College scored four straight point to take a 10-6 lead.

Holmstrom and sophomore Makayla Mickam registered kills to make it 10-8. The Lumberjills got the next two points and went on to victory.

For Finlandia, Mickam had a career-night with 16 kills, four block assists and hit. 353. S. Anderson had 13 kills and 11 digs while Dalton had 13 kills.
