Calumet, Houghton get wins; Hancock falls to WIC

CALUMET — The Calumet Copper Kings continued to roll against the Negaunee Miners, earning a sweep (25-10, 25-13, 25-11) Tuesday in nonconference action in Calumet. 

Lea Bjorn led Calumet with 21 kills on 37 attempts; Brea Johnson added 22 assists; and Amber Johnson recorded 20 digs. 

Next, Calumet (5-0 West-PAC) heads to L’Anse on Thursday for a West-PAC matchup.

L’ANSE — The Houghton Gremlins improved to 4-1 in the West-PAC with a sweep (25-9, 25-13, 25-8) over the L’Anse Purple Hornets Tuesday in L’Anse. 

Houghton’s Kendra Monette had nine kills, five aces and four digs, while Kiley Farrey had six kills and two aces. Mackenzie Klein dished out 11 assists, and Madi Dillinger added 13 digs and five aces. 

For L’Anse, Haley Nankervis had six kills; Mandy Gransell recorded nine assists; and Erika Tollefson had seven digs.

Next, Houghton (23-9-4) hosts the Houghton Invite on Saturday.

IRON RIVER — The Hancock Bulldogs dropped a West-PAC decision to the West Iron County Wykons Tuesday in Iron River. WIC swept the Bulldogs (25-19, 25-21, 25-21).

Hancock’s Emma Almquist finished with 11 kills, while Clariane Alkuino had 26 digs.

Next, Hancock will take part in the Houghton Invite on Saturday.
