Finlandia loses to Trinity Bible 37-14

ELLENDALE, N.D. — Freshman De’Llontae Johnson had a strong performance as the Finlandia University football team (3-3) lost 37-14 to Trinity Bible (2-5), Saturday afternoon at Bob Tatum Field.

Trinity Bible drew first blood scoring a touchdown with 7:38 on the clock in the first quarter. Junior Taylor Bonetti then sparked Finlandia by returning the kickoff 45 yards to the Trinity 40-yard line.

Five plays later, Johnson hit sophomore Bryce Beauchaine for a 9-yard touchdown strike with 4:41 to go. TBC came right back going 70 yards in two plays to make it 12-6 a minute later.

Trinity Bible scored a little over a minute into the second quarter to go up 18-6 and things looked bleak. After a FinnU turnover, TBC was forced to punt. Pressure on the punter caused a loss of 16 yards.

Finlandia took advantage as Beauchaine took a pass from Johnson and went 25 yards to score. Bonetti scored on the 2-point conversion and the Lions were back in it, down 18-14 at the half.

In the second half, FinnU continued to put pressure on Trinity Bible. Finlandia ended up turning the ball over three times which led to three TBC touchdowns to seal the game.

For Finlandia, Johnson was 19-of-33 for 256 yards and two touchdowns. His top targets were junior Tyler Kangas (eight catches for 75 yards) and Beauchaine (five catches for 66 yards and two scores.

Defensively, the Lions had eight tackles for a loss with three sacks. Junior Dillion Hueckstaedt had a monster day with 16 tackles and two for a loss. Bonetti and Kangas had eight tackles each while freshman Caleb Scroggs had 2.5 tackles for a loss with a sack.

For Trinity Bible, Landen Bradley ran for 215 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, Zach Marengo had 12 tackles and David Steeves had 11 tackles with five for a loss.

Finlandia has concluded the 2017 season. It’s the first non-losing season in school history.
