Hancock earns 4-3 OT win over Bay Port

HANCOCK — After jumping out to a two-goal lead over Bay Port in the first period of action, Hancock saw its star forward, Teddy Randell, go out with an injury. A key component to Hancock’s attack, the loss of Randell left the Bulldogs shaken up.

“Teddy is going to be OK,” coach Dan Rouleau said. “It was some muscle injury. He was just in so much pain that he couldn’t go back onto the ice. He is the thing that makes us go, so losing him put us into a lull.”

Bay Port scored two goals in a row, but the Bulldogs got back on track and ended up with a 4-3 overtime win.

Austin Salani had the game-winner just 15 seconds into the extra period. Tyler Brunet passed the puck to Alex Nordstrom, who connected with Salani for the goal.

“It was a very, very good hockey game,” Rouleau said. “Losing Teddy hurt us, but we regrouped and it was a pretty even game the rest of the way.”

At the end of the third period Bay Port had a 5-on-3 with three minutes left to play, but the Bulldogs were able to kill it the advantage.

“The guys just did a great job and we didn’t give them any good chances,” Rouleau said. “That gave us a little momentum that we carried into overtime.”

Austin Salani also scored in regulation along with Colton Salani and Trevor Tchida.

Next up,  Hancock (13-3) hosts Escanaba on Thursday at 7 p.m.
