Houghton competes in Splash-N-Dive

MARQUETTE — The Houghton swim team competed in the Splash-N-Dash swim meet, Saturday in Marquette with wins in multiple events.

Leif Odegard won the Boys 50 Yard backstroke with a time of 29.72 seconds. He was followed up by teammate Colton Haataja in second place, who finished in 30.14.

Haataja was also a part of the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team that finished second in a time of 1:43.25. Kevin Beaghan, Leo Wheeler and Seth Helman rounded out the team.

“Leif and Colton really did a nice job in the 50 Back going one and two, and beyond that, they both had a great meet in all the events they swam,” coach Erik Johnson said. “I was happy our boys relays were competitive, especially our 200 Free Relay.”

Andrew Garland finished first in the Boys 1 Meter Diving, setting his personal best at 174.35.

On the girls side, Johnson said several key swimmers were out with illness, but he was impressed with Olivia Witting, who was part of a Houghton 200 Yard Medley Relay team that finished fourth in a time of 2:07.62. She was joined by Wonyoung Choi, Tessa Meyer and Samantha Olson.

The meet, Johnson said, is a good way for his team to prepare for the latter part of the season.

“We had a great meet with a lot of good times,” he said. “This meet is a good chance to swim and dive in the same format and facility as U.P. Finals against all the schools in the U.P.”

Next up Houghton will participate in a dual meet on Tuesday in Westwood.
