Houghton earns top finishes at home swim meet
HOUGHTON — The Houghton swim team made a strong showing at the Gremlin Splash Saturday in Houghton.
Wonyoung Choi, Mikayla Sague, Tessa Meyer and Samantha Olson won the 200-yard relay in 2 minutes, 3.20 seconds. The Houghton girls also won the 400-yard freestyle relay with Sague, Justine Ra, Meyer and Olson winning in a time of 4:08.74. Olson also took first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:36.60).
Colton Haataja was victorious in the 100-yard free (54.58) and 50-yard freestyle (24.31), and Leo Wheeler won the 200-yard freestyle (2:14.20). Leif Odegard took first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:23.61), while Kevin Beaghan won the 100-yard IM (1:06.04) by .85 seconds.
Houghton’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Seth Helman, Wheeler, Xavier Tarvainen and Haataja took first in a time of 1:45.51. The Houghton boys also won the 400-yard freestyle relay, with Wheeler, Connor Jackson, Odegard and Helman finishing in a time of 4:05.22.
In the mixed 500-yard freestyle relay, Choi, Helman, Olivia Witting and Wheeler won the event in 5:18.15.
In the diving events, Houghton’s Autumn Sanders (54.90) and Andrew Garfield (50.25) each took second.
