Wardynski becomes GCC’s leading scorer

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. — Lori Wardynski became the Lady Samsons’ all-time leading scorer in GCC’s 95-86 victory over Sisseton Wahpeton College Friday night.

Wardynski needed just six points to get the record and she got it midway through the first quarter. She now has scored 1,060 points. The program’s previous high scorer, Jaclyn Aijala, had 1,038 career points.

“I’m glad for her on so many different fronts,” Gogebic Community College coach Mark Movrich said. “I’m glad that she did it because she has worked hard. She deserves it in that regard.”

The Lady Samsons were up by 18 points midway through the second quarter, but they trailed in the fourth quarter.

“It was disappointing the way we played when we gave up the lead,” Movrich said. “Part of that had to do with the other team, they made plays and played hard right until the end. But I thought we contributed a lot to do with our shot selection and decision making.

“But I was glad to see we battled through a little adversity and we found ourselves in a close ballgame and we were able to play well when we really needed to.”

Bailey Froberg led GCC with 36 points and she had 10 boards. Lexi Engler had 11 points and 12 rebounds. Brooke Piilola tallied 10 rebounds.

Gogebic outrebounded them 59-38 despite being outboarded in the first half.

“I think some of it was fatigue on their part. While we may not have created a lot of turnovers on our pressure, especially the offensive rebounds we got were I think due to fatigue,” Movrich said. “So in essence it’s almost like a turnover.”

GCC (12-6) plays host Northland today.
