Boys roundup: Dollar Bay, L’Anse, Chassell all secure wins

BARAGA — The Dollar Bay Blue Bolts cruised to a 68-30 Copper Mountain Conference win over the Baraga Vikings Friday in Baraga.

The win ensures both Dollar Bay (11-0) and Ewen-Trout Creek (13-0) will be undefeated for their showdown Wednesday at Michigan Tech.

Dollar Bay and E-TC are tied for the No. 1 ranking in the U.P. poll, while E-TC is No. 2 in the Associated Press state poll and Dollar Bay is in eighth.

Against Baraga, Devin Schmitz led the Blue Bolts with 18 points, while Jaden Janke had 16 and Jacob Iacono added 12.

Dollar Bay jumped out to a 26-point lead by halftime.

“Steady effort on both ends of the floor tonight,” Dollar Bay coach Jesse Kentala said. “Everybody for Dollar Bay got in the scorebook.”

L’ANSE — The L’Anse Purple Hornets used a 13-3 second quarter to defeat the visiting Hancock Bulldogs 55-46 Friday in a West-PAC contest.

L’Anse (3-9, 1-4) shot 50 percent from the floor (22-44) for the team’s best percentage of the season. The Purple Hornets were led by Reese Waara with 24 points and Alex Kissel who chipped in with 15. The two were a combined 16-20 from the field, contributing to L’Anse’s high shooting percentage.

“Reese Waara and Alex Kissel had huge first quarters and that continued throughout the game,” coach Kyle Koski said. “That was big for us tonight.”

L’Anse was able to score by penetrating Hancock’s man-to-man defense and kicking the ball to open players on the perimeter.

Carson Chynoweth led Hancock with 19 points, and Devin Raasio had 12.

Next up L’Anse hosts Ishpeming on Monday at 7:15 p.m. Hancock (2-9, 0-4) welcomes Republic-Michigamme at 7:20 p.m. on the same day.

REPUBLIC — The Chassell Panthers defeated the Republic-Michigamme Hawks 57-52 Friday in Republic.

The roof caved in on the Hawks in the fourth quarter.

R-M (3-8, 2-7 Copper Mountain Conference) led after each of the first three quarters, including 40-33 after the third period, but was outscored 24-12 in the fourth by the Panthers (9-3, 7-3).

That’s when Chassell’s Abe Gockenbach scored nine of his 17 points.

The Hawks had their own 17-point scorer, Dylan Hanninen, while fellow senior Kasey Ball added 12 points and another senior, River Shumate, added nine.

Chassell, which won the JV game 51-42, also got 13 points from Aaron Barnes.

R-M travels to Hancock on Monday in a game that was added after the season started. Chassell hosts Calumet on Tuesday.

BESSEMER — The Bessemer Speedboys knocked off a young Lake Linden team 62-47 in Copper Mountain Conference play in the House of Noise on Friday night.

“We started off fast with a 15-2 lead,” Bessemer coach Richard Matrella said. “We scored consistently almost every time down for about the first five minutes. Brayden (Tomes) and Tim (Rowe) got us going.”
