E-TC girls rout R-M 64-23

EWEN — Ewen-Trout Creek set the tone early and went on to rout Republic-Michigamme 64-23 in Monday night’s MHSAA Class D District 127 tournament opener.

The Panthers scored off the steals their man-to-man pressure created and led 25-5 after the first quarter. It was 42-9 at halftime.

“We focused on making sure we came out with a lot of intensity, good defense and that we shot with confidence,” E-TC coach Jacky Besonen said.

Abbie LeGault and Ava Moilanen both scored 14 points to lead the Panthers. Elise Besonen had 13.

“I thought we had good balanced scoring,” coach Besonen said.

E-TC (16-4), ranked fourth in the U.P., goes to Crystal Falls Forest Park for a district semifinal Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. EST. The Panthers are looking to end the Trojans’ run of seven straight district titles.

“We’re really excited to play in Crystal on Wednesday,” Besonen said. “That’s going to be key, get a good, strong start on Wednesday and playing with confidence, that’s important.”
