Girls basketball roundup: Baraga beats DB; L’Anse loses to WIC

DOLLAR BAY — The Baraga Vikings (9-10, 9-5) took the court with heavy hearts after learning of the death of Marco Fenili, a close friend of the program. Baraga defeated Dollar Bay 46-39 in a road victory the team dedicated to Fenili.

“It was an emotional game for our team,” Baraga coach Tom Goodreau said.

Dollar Bay (3-16, 3-11) led the Copper Mountain Conference game 24-23 at halftime.

“We started out strong in the first quarter with a full court press.  In the second quarter we struggled to score and rebounded poorly,” Goodreau said. “We regrouped at halftime and we played well enough to gain the victory. You have to credit Dollar Bay for playing us tough right to the end.”

Martina Jahfetson scored 13 points for Baraga, and Bailey Poyhonen had 15 for Dollar Bay.

Next up, Dollar Bay finishes the regular season by hosting Ewen-Trout Creek today at 7:20 p.m.

L’ANSE — West Iron County snapped a fourth-quarter deadlock and defeated L’Anse 46-39 in West-PAC girls basketball Wednesday.

The Wykons (15-4, 5-3) held a 19-18 halftime lead but the Hornets evened the score at 34 after three quarters.

“We missed a lot of easy-chance buckets and L’Anse held us in check with a 3-2 defense,” WIC coach Eric Shamion said.

The Wykons outscored the Hornets 12-5 in the fourth quarter.

“We set up a full-court press that led to turnovers and helped win the ball game,” Shamion said of the fourth quarter.

Eden Golliher and Colbi Laturi each scored 12 points for WIC. Anna Malmquist chipped in nine. Emily Nelson, playing for the first time since suffering a concussion Feb. 8, added six points.

Taylor Brown’s 18 points topped L’Anse.
