Girls roundup: Houghton, Calumet lose nonconference games

MARQUETTE — The Houghton Gremlins nearly pulled the upset but instead fell to the No. 3 Marquette Redettes 54-50 in a nonconference game Tuesday in Marquette.

Houghton’s Kara Pietila led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds while Kendra Monette added 17 points.

Houghton had a 47-46 lead with 2.1 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. With two fouls to give, Houghton attempted to foul to force Marquette to inbound the ball once again. But the Gremlins were called for a foul as Marquette was shooting.

The Redettes split the free throws before outscoring Houghton 7-3 in the overtime session for the win.

“Both teams competed hard,” Houghton coach Julie Filpus said. “We came out and had a great start to the third quarter to outscore them 16-6.

“We’re happy with the progress we’re making, but it still starts with improving on the defensive end.”

Next, Houghton (9-6) heads to Ontonagon on Thursday.
