Superior National Bank beats Mattila and heads to softball finals

LAKE LINDEN — Hot bats and heads-up baserunning led Superior National Bank to a 12-2 victory over Mattila Rock and Dock in a semifinal game of the Copper Country’s Women’s Softball League on Wednesday at the Boneyard. The win puts them in the championship game tonight against Auto Pro Glass and Tire.

“We did what we’ve been doing all year,” said SNB player-manager Adena Anderson, “that is playing heads-up ball.”

Superior entered the tournament as the number one seed with a record of 8-4 while Mattila came in to the tournament with an 0-9 record and the bottom seed. In the first inning, Superior got on the scoreboard first with a single by Beth Tormanen off of Mattila’s starting pitcher Katie Mattila. She would go to second on an infield single by Rachel Kinnunen and would be knocked in by Larissa Anderson.

They would get a second run in the bottom of the second inning as Andrea L’Esperance walked, stole second and with two outs, Tormanen doubled to left field to bring her home.

Mattila tied it the third inning. Catcher Jennifer Laitala led things off with a double up the middle. She was knocked in with a base hit to right by Kylie Thomphson. Grace Laitala then smacked a line drive to the centerfield fence for a triple and came home on a throwing error.

But that wasn’t enough as Mattila’s pitching was no match for SNB’s bats. They scored five in the bottom of the third, tallied four more in the fourth and one more in the sixth. The game ended in the sixth due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Despite not having won a game this season, coach Diane Mattila said it was fun for the most part.

“We were plagued with people not showing up and a couple of injuries,” she said. “Plus we had a lot of new players or people who hadn’t played in a while. But for those girls who did play, it was a good opportunity to play softball and work as a team.”
