Lakes get off to fast start at West Iron

The Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes volleyball team had a strong first outing of the season at the annual West Iron County tournament that was held Saturday. Lake Linden finished 7-3 for the day, which included wins over Baraga and L’Anse, and split sets with West Iron County, Ironwood and Stephenson.

Joslynn Perala, Alyssa Burton, and Mariah Willmer were all big offensive contributors for the Lakes with 25, 17, and 16 kills, respectively. Perala also led the Lakes in digs (35), and aces (12). Kaitlyn Baccus also contributed 26 digs in what first-year coach Mandy Perreault called “a great start to the season.”

“I’m excited to see what this team can accomplish,” said Perreault. “We have so much potential and the girls show a strong desire to improve and learn, so I think we’re in a very good place for the start of the season.”

Perreault was also particularly impressed with the play of junior setter Jamie Hendrickson, who led the Lakes with 55 assists.

“Even though she’s only a junior, Jamie looked like she has been a varsity setter for years,” Perrault said. “She made it look easy on Saturday.”

The Lakes will be back in action on Thursday in Chassell during a triangular with the home team and Baraga.
