Monticello tops Hauswirth to win Jazzy Giroux

CALUMET — High drama hit the Calumet Golf Club on Sunday, Aug. 6 as Jay Monticello, who had tied for medalist on Saturday, needed an extra hole in match play to earn the 2018 Jazzy Giroux Memorial Shortstop over former tournament champion Kyle Hauswirth.

Monticello finished in a three-way tie for medalist in the qualifying round on Saturday with Trevor Salata and Bill Darnell Jr. as all three shot 76.

In the flights, Jim Escolas took First Flight. Mark Huru took Second Flight. Austin Mikesch earned the win in Third Flight. Chris Cooney earned a victory in Fourth Flight.

On the senior side of the tournament, Russ Erkkila headed into Sunday in good shot, earning medalist honors with a 72.

When all was said and done, however, the best Erikkila could manage was the top spot in First Flight.

That’s because Keith Kus fought his way to the top of the mountain and defeated Joe Snow in the final match for the title. The tournament win was the second of Kus’ career at the senior level.

Mark Crocker took Second Flight. Third Flight went to Carl Clouthier.
