Copper Kings, Lakes earn WestPAC All-Conference honors

CALUMET — On Tuesday, the WestPAC Iron Division announced the All-Conference team followed by the Copper Division on Wednesday.

The Copper Kings were honored in nearly every position, starting with coach John Croze named Coach of the Year for his team’s undefeated regular season.

Calumet’s Nick Djerf was named Special Teams Player of the Year.

Travis Ojala was named Offensive Player of the Year for Calumet. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound senior was also named to the Copper Division team at running back, outside linebacker and punter.

Joining Ojala on the offensive team was teammates Drew Bjorne at center, Josh VanDenburg at guard, Alex Studebaker, Matt Ojala at receiver and Brent Loukus at quarterback.

Hancock’s Austin Salani was named at receiver. L’Anse’s Jonah Dowd was named at running back.

L’Anse’s Max Ostermeyer earned honorable mention at center, Houghton’s Sam Keskimaki was also given honorable mention at tight end and Nathan Erva was given mention at running back. Calumet’s Trevor Hendrickson was honored at fullback. Hancock’s Colton Salani was honored at quarterback. Hendrickson, a 5-foot-9, 180-pound senior, also earned honorable mention for Defensive Player of the Year. He was named as an inside linebacker to the All-Conference team.

On the defensive side of the ball, Calumet’s Jayden Gariepi was named as a defensive lineman. He was joined by VanDenburg at defensive end and Loukus at defensive back.

Houghton’s Ty Halonen was named to the All-Conference team at inside linebacker.

Houghton’s Ewan Beyer and L’Anse’s Devan Funke were both honored for their efforts as defensive linemen. L’Anse’s Alec Rajala and Evan Larson from Hancock were honored at outside linebacker.

L’Anse’s Alec Sanregret was honored for his efforts at inside linebacker. Hancock’s Connor LeClaire, L’Anse’s Reese Waara and Calumet’s Sam Erkkila were all honored at defensive back.

Waara was named at kicker with Hancock’s Brendan LeClaire was honored for his efforts.

The Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes had one player named to the Iron Division offense team, two to the defensive team and one earned a special award as well.

On offense, Kellen Klein, a 5-foot-11 senior, was named as a fullback. Ben Wilson earned honorable mention as a guard.

On defense, Wilson, a 5-foot-8 senior, was named as an inside linebacker. He was joined by Carter Crouch at defensive back. Crouch, a 5-foot-9 junior, also was named to the team as a punter.

Jesse Hill, a 5-foot-7 junior, earned honorable mention as an outside linebacker.

Crouch also was named the Special Teams Player of the Year for his efforts in the punting game for the Lakes.
