Jeffers tops Nimrods

PAINESDALE — Looking to build off a good win on Monday, the Jeffers Jets volleyball team was back at it Tuesday, and they defeated the Watersmeet Nimrods in three sets, 25-17, 25-11 and 25-18 at home.

Gracia Asiala finished out the last home game of her volleyball career with an eight-point serving streak that helped the Jets’ build the lead they needed to take the opening set.

Setter Heidi Hillstrom, who was also playing her last home match, ended the night with five serves, four digs and 17 sets.

“It was very good,” said Jets coach Rachel Torp. “I’m glad that we pulled this one out for our seniors today. It was a really good feeling for them to get the win.”

Junior Jersey Hoover broke a 9-9 tie in the second set with a six-point serving streak in the middle of the second match. The Nimrods had a few opportunities to even up the score but were unable to meet the Jets at their level.

An ealy 4-1 lead in the third set showed some signs of life for the Nimrods, but late returns forced them into comeback mode after trailing 9-11 in the middle of the set. Jeffers held on to their lead until junior Brenna Hill’s match-point hit the middle of the floor.

Tuesday’s win should help the Jets prepare for their district matches in Watersmeet, which start on Halloween.

“We’re going into practice tomorrow (and) working on our hits,” Torp said. “(We want to) keep that momentum going (by) putting away those kills. That’s what we need to do to keep moving forward (as we) get ready for districts.”

Nimrods coach Chelsea Edwards was happy with the way her team played despite coming up short.

“I think we played better than we previously (have),” she said. “We’ve been working together as a team, so we did better. We need to work on moving our feet a lot more, blocking the ball (and calling (for the ball) and just working together as a team.

“Our serves were actual really good. We had Jonell Poler, who had a couple of the blocks today. (I’m) really trying to work her on the net more.”
