Bulldogs, Panthers earn wins Tuesday

Hancock squeezes out 43-41 win over Calumet

CALUMET — A 17-point fourth quarter was enough for the Hancock Bulldogs girls basketball team to battle back on the road and earn a 43-41 victory over the Calumet Copper Kings Tuesday.

Calumet led 16-5 after the first quarter as Taylor Sebbas was the only Hancock player to get on the board. While Sebbas was held off the board in the second, D’Andra Kero helped spark a rally that saw the Bulldogs shave off three points before the half.

Coming out of the break, Kero hit several key free throws as the Bulldogs outscored the hosts, 11-6, cutting the lead down to three, 29-26.

In the fourth, Kirsten Dennis and Janie Berg each hit threes and Sebbas made four key free throws to help the Bulldogs take the lead and seal the win.

Panthers down Hawks 66-17

EWEN — Paige Bergland and Elise Besonen each put up 16 points as the Ewen-Trout Creek Panthers cruised to a 66-17 victory over the visiting Republic-Michigamme Hawks Tuesday.

The Panthers scored 22 and 21 points in the first 16 minutes of the contest to take a 43-7 lead into halftime.

“It was a great team effort by our girls,” said Panthers coach Jackie Besonen. “We had three girls in double digits and everyone scored.”

When all was said and done, the Panthers actually had four in double figures as Borseth and LeGault both had at least 10 points.

Coach Besonen was pleased with the way her team defended throughout the night.

“Our defense made it difficult for Republic to find many points tonight,” she said.
