Girls roundup: Panthers, Purple Hornets win, Bulldogs lose

Panthers top Lakes, 56-25

CHASSELL — The Chassell Panthers used some stingy defense in the second quarter to outscore the visiting Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes, 13-4. The Panthers then rode out the game from there, earning a 56-25 victory at the Chassell Gym.

“We played an all-around solid game,” said Panthers coach Bill Sleeman. “Our intensity was great tonight from start to finish.

“We had balanced scoring with three girls in double figures.”

The Panthers were paced by Lela Rautiola with 13 points, Paige Sleeman with 12 and Jenna Pietila with 11.

“We have been going through somewhat of a learning curve,” Sleeman said. “It was great to see us play with more confidence and certainty. Hopefully we can build upon this and keep progressing going forward.”

The Panthers jumped out to a 17-9 after one quarter in part thanks to six points from Rautiola and five from Paige Sleeman. Chassell then upped that 30-13 by halftime.

In the second half, Pietila heated up, putting up seven points in the third quarter and then the Panthers used balanced scoring to add 12 more points in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

“Everybody got to make a contribution and it was a great team win,” said Sleeman.
