Copper Kings swept by Cranes

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. — After opening their season 2-0, the Division 3 No. 1 Calumet Copper King suffered through a tough weekend on the road against Bloomfield Hills-Cranbrook-Kingswood over the weekend. On Friday, the Copper Kings fell, 6-3, and on Saturday, they came up just short, 3-2, in overtime.

Captain Brent Loukus struck twice for Calumet in the Friday night game and Landon Johnson added a goal.

It was not enough to overcome a four-goal second period by the Cranes, however.

Scott Loukus racked up two assists and Alex Mattila added one.

Alex Studebaker made 17 saves on 23 shots in the contest.

On Saturday, Tanner Rowe and Gabe Coppo scored in the second period for the Copper Kings, which helped even the game at 2-2.

Neither team scored in the third.

Sam Kiiskila made 22 saves in his high school hockey debut for Calumet.

Calumet is back in action tonight at Marquette.

Gremlins fall to Eagles, 3-2

HOUGHTON — Coming into Saturday’s contest, the Houghton Gremlins were undefeated through three games. That changed with a 3-2 loss to Hartland at Dee Stadium.

Seth Francois and Brendan Erickson scored for the Gremlins in the contest.

Ty Halonen, Nathan Erva, and Niko Rajala all had assists.

Jimmy Pietila made 16 saves on 19 shots in the loss.
