Panthers squeeze out 65-59 win over Lakes

LAKE LINDEN — The Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes boys basketball team got off to a very slow start against the Chassell Panthers, but found a way to fight their way back to take a lead into the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the Lakes, the Panthers outscored them 26-16 in the final frame to earn a 65-59 victory.

“We were able to put a bad start behind us and get back into the game behind a big second quarter led by Carter Crouch and Caleb Gregoire,” said Lakes coach Jack Kumpula. “Chassell had a big fourth quarter of their own behind Karl Rautiola’s 10 points.”

Kumpala was extremely happy to see his team, which trailed 20-5 after the first quarter, fight back throughout the night from there. William Lyons, who scored 12 of his 15 points after the first quarter. Crouch racked up 11 of his 19 in the second quarter. Caleb Gregoire was also strong in the second, getting seven of his 13 points.

“I was pleased with the way we played,” Kumpala said. “I thought William Lyons really gave us a spark off the bench and helped to get us back into the game.

“The difference was Chassell’s poise in the fourth quarter. they have been in a lot of tough games and it showed. We are still learning.”
