L’ANSE — At L’Anse, Maija Rice led the Purple Hornets with 10 points but it wasn’t enough to upset the No. 1-ranked Divisions 1-3 girls team in the Upper Peninsula.

“I thought we took a lot of high-percentage shots,” L’Anse head coach Scott Lloyd said. “They’re the No. 1 team in the U.P. for a reason. They were a lot bigger than we were. We struggled with shots in the paint. They blocked everything there.

“I’m pleased with my girls, though. If we hang with West Iron it shows we can hang with anyone.”

“My girls came to compete” said Lloyd “They fought all night with West Iron County. They were down eight points going into the third, we ended up within two points in the third (quarter).”

Turnovers got the best of L’Anse in the end despite Lloyd seeing some improvement.

“We were right with them,” said Lloyd. “We had chances to score. We had a lot of high percentage shots in the paint. I wish we had them back. (It) could’ve made it a lot closer maybe even made a difference in it.”

L’Anse will host Hancock Thursday.
