Gremlins break through: Houghton earns win over Glads

HOUGHTON — The Houghton Gremlins girls basketball team notched their second victory of the year on Saturday afternoon as they outplayed the Ontonagon Gladiators en route to a 37-23 win.

“It’s beautiful to get a win,” said Houghton coach Julie Filpus. “From start to finish, our girls kept their composure and played a complete game. I am proud of our efforts.”

The Gremlins jumped out to a 7-2 lead and never looked back. They played patiently and worked the ball well offensively. Before the first half ended, they were up by as many as 17 points with a score of 23-6.

“Every one of the girls played well,” said Filpus. “It was a good team win.”

Cassie Ryynanen once again led the scoring for the Gremlins with 13 points. She was particularly strong in the paint as she repeatedly drove hard to the basket.

Maryellen Trewhella followed in the scoring with 11 points. Josie Connors led the Gremlins in the three-point column with two.

As for Ontonagon, the shots were there they just would not fall. They missed numerous layups much to the frustration of their coach Richard Franti. Three of the four quarters, the Gladiators scored less than five points.

They also shot a dismal 8-26 from the free-throw line.

Ella Menigoz led the scoring with seven points.

“It was a bad day all around,” he said. ” I do not know what else to say.”
