Vikings still sailing: Baraga advances to regional final with win over Munising Monday
KINGSFORD — The Baraga Vikings girls basketball team used a strong start and a strong finish to advance in the Division 4 Region 25 tournament with a 57-42 victory Monday night over the Munising Mustangs in the Kingsford Gym.
Baraga coach Tom Goodreau was happy not only with the way his team played, but also with the support they got from the crowd.
“(There was) a lot of energy from the Baraga fans tonight,” said Goodreau. “Our girls came out in the first half and played composed.”
Both teams were whistled for 19 fouls, which was less than ideal for a Vikings’ squad that is already undermanned in terms of its bench.
“We had trouble handling them down low and got into some foul trouble,” Goodreau said. “We did a much better job in the second half defensively and pushed the tempo.
“We were able to force them into some fouls and hit our free throws.”
Rylie Koskinen helped push the pace for the Vikings in the first quarter with six of her 14 points. Reide Osterman was also good in the opening eight minutes, picking up five of her 15. Osterman added five assists.
In the second quarter, Jaylyne Lindemann took over for the Vikings, posting eight points, including a three and three free throws. She continued her hot hand through the third quarter, racking up another four points on her way to a game-high 18. She also had four rebounds and four blocks.
The Vikings held a 26-21 lead at the half.
In the third, the Vikings continued to push the pace, racking up 14 points, six of which came out of the hands of Osterman.
In the fourth, Martina Jahfetson, who only had two points through the three quarters, hit a key three-pointer and two more points on free throws to give her seven points on the night.
The Vikings will face Stephenson on Wednesday for the chance to get to the state quarterfinals.
