Michigan Tech, Lake Superior State win Great Lakes Invitational hockey semifinals
DETROIT — Michigan Tech will face Lake Superior State after each beat Big Ten rivals in the semifinals of the 54th annual Great Lakes Invitational college hockey tournament on Sunday.
Michigan Tech tied Michigan 2-2 and won the game in a shootout, while Lake Superior State upended Michigan State 4-3 in overtime. The Huskies and Lakes face each other at 2:30 p.m. today on Fox Sports Detroit. The Wolverines and Spartans play in the third-place game, also on FSD at 11:30 a.m.
Michigan was forced to answer MTU twice in tying the game at 1-1 and 2-2. Tech’s goals were scored by Alec Broetzman on a power play 1:55 into the game and by Brian Halonen with 12:45 left in the second period, just 1:13 after the Wolverines had tied it.
The Huskies won in the shootout’s fifth round on a shot by Tommy Parrottino after teammate Jake Lucchini scored two rounds earlier.
LSSU won its game when Diego Cuglietta scored 3:05 into OT. MSU had taken a 2-0 lead before the Lakers stormed back with three straight goals before the second period was half over by Anthony Nellis, Cuglietta on a power play and Max Humitz.
