Strawberry Queen: ‘That’s super-cool,’ says Emilie Jacques of Calumet

Garrett Neese/Daily Mining Gazette Emilie Jacques, an incoming senior at Calumet High School, is crowned Strawberry Queen Friday night.

CHASSELL — Emilie Jacques’ first Strawberry Festival is already one to remember.

The Calumet High School senior was crowned Strawberry Queen after Friday’s competition.

Isabella Menzel-Smith was named Miss Congeniality, while Ashley Huffmaster was chosen as Miss Photogenic.

Jacques, sponsored by Celebrations, is the daughter of Sean and Theresa Jacques.

Her immediate reaction to winning was “That’s super-cool.”

“It’s a little surprising, but I also wish everyone else could have won, because everyone deserved to win,” she said. “All these girls are so amazing. I’ve made so many awesome friends. It’s also a childhood dream of mine to win a pageant.”

This was Jacques’ first time attending the Strawberry Festival. So far, she said, it’s been a great experience.

For the rest of the festival, the part she’s anticipating the most is looking at the vendors.

“I think there’s some pretty cool stuff out right now,” she said.
