Bodies recovered in car fire
PORTAGE TOWNSHIP — Authorities say the bodies of two people have been found following a vehicle fire in in Portage Township.
Houghton County Undersheriff Kevin Coppo says deputies were dispatched to Portage Township near Tapiola on Sunday to respond to a report of a vehicle fire.
WLUC-TV reports firefighters found two bodies inside the vehicle.
Names of the dead were not released as of 7:30 Monday morning. At approximately 9:42 a.m. Sunday morning, Houghton County deputies were dispatched to the Donken/Tapiola Road in response to a car fire, the release stated.
The Otter Lake Fire Department was dispatched to extinguish the fire, and once extinguished, the fire department discovered two bodies inside the vehicle. Because of fire, the identities were unknown as of Monday morning pending autopies scheduled later in the day.
Coppo said in a telephone interview Monday morning that the incident is not yet being investigated as a homicide or any specific type of investigation. As of the time of the press release, Houghton County detectives, Houghton County Medical Examiner, and the Michigan State Police Fire Marshal were on the scene, continuing the investigation.
“We haven’t released the names of the victims, because they haven’t been identified yet,” Coppo said. “The autopsies are scheduled for today.”
