Boy, 12, dies from injuries sustained in flood
ANN ARBOR — The flash flood Sunday has claimed the life of 12-year-old Thatcher Markham of Houghton, according to an announcement from Houghton High School Tuesday afternoon.
The boy died Monday night at Motts Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor
Markham, the son of Rodney and Joanne Markham, sustained serious injuries while he was sleeping in the basement of the family’s residence on the Canal Road, when debris carried by floodwater caused a collapse.
Rodney Markham dug his son out of the debris and performed CPR.
Emergency personnel and the father transported the boy to the Hancock boat launch with a neighbor’s boat, due to severe flooding and road washouts.
The boy was transported by Mercy EMS to UP Health System – Portage hospital, where they were able to get a pulse.
He was airlifted to the children’s hospital, where as of Monday afternoon, a family member at the hospital confirmed the boy was in serious condition.
