Shooting accident kills teen

MASS CITY — A 16-year-old boy was killed in a shooting accident in Mass City Friday afternoon.

The 16-year-old was at the home of a 13-year-old boy who was loading his rifle. The gun discharged, hitting the 16-year-old in the back, according to a sheriff’s release.

A 14-year-old boy who was also at the home called 911. The department was called to the scene at 3:08 p.m.

SONCO Ambulance transported the victim to Ontonagon Aspirus Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources officers, a U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement officer and the Michigan Sheriff’s Association Victims Services Unit.
