CHTC seeks partners in other local clubs

Graham Jaehnig/Daily Mining Gazette Nathan Miller, executive director of the Copper Harbor Trails Club, says with the County Board’s approval of the county’s five-year recreation plan, the club is has begun planning a new trail that will eventually span Copper Harbor to Calumet.

COPPER HARBOR — With the approval of the Keweenaw County Five-Year Recreation Plan, the Copper Harbor Trails Club (CHTC) is also preparing to move forward with plans for increasing its number of miles of trails, and working with other groups to refine existing trails, and refine how the trails are used, as other groups also make plans.

“We want to be partners in a lot of these projects,” said CHTC Executive Director Nathan Miller, “so we don’t want to monopolize our use of these public places, so where we can kind of partner with these motorized groups to try to offer non-motorized and motorized trails in these same areas, we want to try to do that as much as we can, so we don’t want to block out the motorized trail users, because they are recreationists, too.”

Miller said the CHTC has received many inquiries about how to access the club’s trails, to which the response has been that most of the trails are in and around Copper Harbor, and toward Keweenaw Point. While they are optimized for mountain biking, Miller said, they can also be used for hiking, skiing and snowshoeing.

“They reply ‘I have a Jeep,’ or something like that, so that’s when we send them to the Keweenaw ATV Club, or other groups,” said Miller.

As the Keweenaw ATV Club seeks more trails that are ATV-friendly and welcoming, Miller said his group is looking to move many of the CHTC trails from two-track roads, to “single-track” trails, in order to expand the areas ATV clubs can access.

While most of the CHTC trails are in the immediate vicinity of Copper Harbor and outward toward High Rock Pay, Keystone Bay, and other areas on Keweenaw Point, the club is planning a new trail, the Keweenaw Ridge Trail, that will reach from Copper Harbor to Mohawk, and eventually to Calumet.
