Medical condition linked to crash

CALUMET — A Calumet man died after he suffered a medical emergency Thursday night while driving, leading to a two-car crash.

About 5:15 p.m., Jeffrey Ruona, 56, had lost control of his vehicle and accelerated, leaving the roadway, the Michigan State Police said in a release. His vehicle struck a parked vehicle before coming to rest against a fence, according to on-scene investigation and witness statements, the MSP said.

Ruona was unresponsive when witnesses approached him. Calumet Township First Responders and Mercy EMS personnel attempted lifesaving measures on Ruona. He was transported to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital. There he was pronounced dead and confirmed to have suffered from a medical condition.

The crash remains under investigation.
