LAKE LINDEN — The Lake Linden Village Council held their regular monthly meeting at the village hall on Thursday night to handle the regular business of the village.

FEMA analysis posted to their web portal was inaccurate and needs to be corrected before it can be approved, according to village clerk Robert Poirier. Some work was credited to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) that was outside of their jurisdiction and other work was marked complete that are still unfinished. Poirier is working with a new FEMA representative who told him that reworking the analysis may result in additional funds for the village.

“We just want to get it straightened out,” Poirier said.

The board approved ordering a hydrant and pipe for water main work on 2nd Street, in order to avoid an expected jump in cost in 2019.

Lake Linden Department of Public Works requested some equipment including a newer pickup to be used as a plow truck. The newest truck they currently have is a 2003 Chevy Silverado that can’t be fitted with a plow because it has a cracked frame.

The fire department has been looking for a new fire truck, and have found two possibilities. The search for a truck is complicated because of the size of the fire hall. The door on the hall is too short and the hall isn’t long enough to fit larger trucks.

If the department decides one of the trucks will work, the village council will have to meet to approve the expense.

The fire department assembled and donated goodie bags for the Christmas movie night at the village hall. They also gave a tour to kids from the BHK school system.

“We gave them a little presentation on fire safety,” Chief Erik Miller reported to the council.

The council also reviewed bids to replace the telephone system in the village hall.

“We have a hard time retrieving messages for whatever reason,” Poirier said. “The system is almost 15 years old.”

Up and Running Technology Solutions bid for the four phones, switch control and installation was $3,792. Baraga Telephone’s bid came in at $2,261.

Poirier told the council that there is money in the village hall budget for the phones, but they tabled until after 6-month budget review planned for January’s meeting.

The council moved to continue supporting the U.P. Substance Enforcement Team (UPSET), with a $2,000 contribution, and also intends to include the payment in the regular budget next year.

The council also reappointed Jim Aittama and Alan Hoffman to the Torch Lake Area Sewage Authority board, citing their longstanding experience and seniority on the board.
