1K lose power in Houghton Thursday

HOUGHTON — About 1,000 customers lost power in the Houghton area after an equipment malfunction Thursday night.

The outage occurred at 5:01 p.m., knocking out power to 1,015 customers in the Houghton area, said Brett French, Upper Peninsula Power Co. vice president of business development and communications. Power was restored to 869 customers at 6:08 p.m. The other customers had their power restored at 7:08 p.m.

French said it was unclear Thursday what piece of equipment malfunctioned or where it was located. He said he would be looking into the cause in the morning.
