Grant for new patrol car approved

HOUGHTON — Houghton County will get a new patrol vehicle thanks to a recently received a $24,400 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development.

USDA looks at a set of criteria including the needs and priorities of the region, said Jason Allen, the state director for USDA.

“Obviously public safety is one of those,” he said. “We are very happy to support the needs of the county and ensure that safety is preeminent. I also want to remind the citizens and local units of government we have additional resources available.”

USDA has also worked closely on water and sewer issues in communities, and helped with other infrastructure issues, Allen said. Rural Development awarded more than $1 billion last year across its various programs, he said, including financing first homes for families, as well as community facilities such as day care centers, police buildings and fire stations.

Houghton County will contribute an additional $20,089.
