Names released in fatal crash

CALUMET — The victim of Tuesday’s one-car crash in Calumet Townships has been identified.

James Christner, 81, of Houghton, died at the scene after being ejected from the vehicle, the sheriff’s office said. The crash occurred about 4:30 p.m. on U.S. 41 near No. 4 Road in Centennial Location, the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

The driver, Arthur Oikarinen, 72, sustained minor injuries.

The GMC S10 Blazer was headed northbound on U.S. 41 when Oikarinen lost control and drove onto the shoulder. He overcorrected, sliding sideways and flipping the vehicle, the sheriff’s office said. The driver was wearing a seatbelt, while the passenger was not, the sheriff’s office said.

Alcohol or drugs were not factors in the crash, the sheriff’s office said.

The crash remains under investigation, the sheriff’s office said. A report will be filed with the Houghton County Prosecutor’s Office for further review of the case.
