Pilot’s body, plane found in Ontonagon County

CARP LAKE TOWNSHIP — The body of a pilot was found with his plane in Carp Lake Township after an extensive air and ground search Saturday.

The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department was notified Saturday that an aircraft had failed to arrive at its desitnation of the Gogebic County Airport after taking off at the Ontonagon County Airport.

After getting the pilot’s last known cell phone location, the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department found a more definitive location in Carp Lake Township with the aid of Civil Air Patrol.

Several organizations teamed up for a search in a remote and inaccessible part of the township: the Ontonagon and Gogebic county sheriff’s departments, U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement, Michigan State Police Wakefield Post, Porcupine Mountains State Park Rangers and the Rockland Township Fire Department. The Civil Air Patrol assisted the search from the air.

The pilot’s name has not been released pending notification of family.

The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the crash.
