HOUGHTON — A Calumet man pleaded guilty to breaking and entering into a Calumet business in Houghton County Circuit Court Wednesday.

Mitchell Byykonen, 20, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering with intent to commit a crime, a 10-year felony. In exchange for the plea, charges of larceny – $1,000 to $20,000 and larceny by conversion will be dropped.

At his plea hearing Wednesday, Byykkonen said he had broken into Copper Island Printing in Calumet.

A friend of his had given him a key to the building, Byykonen said. Once inside, they took computers and hard drives, he said.

“Did you believe that you, along with that friend, had the right to go into that building and use that key?” Judge Charles Goodman said.

“It was wrong,” Byykkonen said.

He tried to sell the computer, but was caught by police before the transaction could be completed, Byykkonen said.

Byykkonen will also be eligible for the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act status after sentencing. HYTA gives defendants 23 or younger to expunge the conviction from their record if they successfully complete probation.

Byykkonen’s bond was continued until sentencing, which is scheduled for Dec. 9.
