L’Anse house fire kills 1

L’ANSE — One person was killed in a Wednesday morning fire on Fourth Street in L’Anse.

The fire was reported about 9:35 a.m., said L’Anse Fire Chief Mike Bianco. Fire trucks were able to knock down flames coming out of the front of the house almost immediately, he said.

The victim of the fire was found in the back of the house after police officers knocked in the back door. They found the man on the floor, carried him outside and began administering CPR.

Bay Ambulance transported the man to Baraga County Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The victim’s name has not been released.

The department was on scene fighting the fire for about two hours, Bianco said. He and a lieutenant then stayed on scene for another hour until the fire marshal could arrive.

The north side of the building was gutted by the fire, Bianco said, based on the level of damage.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, Bianco said. The Michigan State Police Fire Marshal arrived on scene Wednesday and will continue investigating the fire Thursday.

Assisting in the response were village of L’Anse employees, Michigan State Police, Baraga County Sheriff’s Department and Bay Ambulance.
