Building damage in Chassell Twp. fire

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP — A Portage Township resident is in serious condition after a Sunday afternoon fire.

The fire happened around 2 p.m. Sunday at a building on the corner of U.S. 41 and Broemer Road. Firefighters were able to contain it to the building’s front office section, said Portage Township Fire Chief Jared Routsala.

The three occupants of the building were able to get out of the house, Routsala said. One was airlifted to Essentia Health – St. Mary’s in Duluth, Minnesota, where he was in serious condition Monday afternoon.

Other sections of the building sustained smoke and water damage.

Firefighters were on scene four about four hours, Ruotsala said. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Chassell Fire Department provided mutual aid.
