Hancock Interact Club recognizes Earth Day
HANCOCK — Hancock Public Schools Interact Club celebrated Earth Day on Wednesday, adding a new component this year: face masks, gloves and social distancing. Club members braved cold north winds and cloudy weather to carry signs on Front Street, near the lift bridge, and at the corner of U.S. 41 and White Street, in Hancock, locally known as “the blinker light.”
The Interact Club is a service organization in Hancock High school, hosted by Rotary International. In addition to other activities, the Interact Club holds two blood drives every year in an effort to help give back to the community. Interact clubs bring together young people ages 12-18, to develop leadership skills, while discovering the power of Service Above Self, states the the club’s Facebook page.
“The mission for Hancock High School’s Interact Club,” states the page, “is to provide great community service and to host and sponsor positive events in our community.”
Interact Club member Sophie Heinonen said her club described the club as “like a junior form of Rotary. and we do service projects. We do our blood drives at our school every year.”
Heinonen said the Earth Day observation was the first activity the club has conducted since face-to-face classes were suspended in March due to the COVID-19 outbreak and, sadly, she added, it was probably the last activity the club will conduct this school year.
