HPTS Math teacher offers updates on new learning method

HOUGHTON — Middle School math teacher Tiffany Scullion said Monday began the third week of classes moving online for Houghton-Portage Township Middle School math.

Starting April 20, students began be receiving grades in PowerSchool for completed math assignments. At the end of the marking period, students (who) have completed all of the assigned math assignments will receive a satisfactory grade for the marking period.

“I have the math classes set up so students have two days to complete each math assignment, which consists of 5-10 problems,” she said. “This means that every week there are two or three math assignments due. There is also a work catch up day built in at the end of each chapter and more of these days at the end of the marking period should students get behind.”

Scullion also said she been posting videos on Google Classroom that go over problems in the math workbook that match up with the online homework problems.

“Please check out these videos prior to starting the math homework,” she advised. “Email me if you have any questions or need help. I check my email all throughout the day.”

To students completing homework online, Scullion said she can see the assignments as soon as they are turned in. No additional steps are necessary to receive credit for completing them.

For students doing homework in the workbook, she said she will need to verify that the assignments are done.

“There are several ways we can do this, including email pictures of the completed workbook assignments,” she explained. “Rip out completed workbook pages and turn in at the school, or complete a weekly homework check and turn it in at the school. Please let me know if any of these ways work for you, or if you have a different idea.”

Lastly, Scullion asked the students to just try their best.

“Let me know if you need help. Watch the videos posted on Google Classroom and/or check out examples in your workbook or in the online textbook,” She said. “Don’t forget you can check in with me on Thursdays during our Google Meet time (11 a.m. – Math 8 & 1 p.m. – Math 7) – all students should have received an invitation a couple weeks ago, but it can be sent again. You can email me anytime.”
