Houghton County, Houghton receive $28K in marijuana payments

LANSING — Houghton County and Houghton are among the jurisdictions receiving part of $10 million in payments statewide for licensed marijuana businesses.

More than 100 municipalities and counties received money through the state’s Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act. For Fiscal Year 2020, each municipality and county will receive about $28,000 for each licensed retail store and microbusiness in its jurisdiction.

Houghton County and Houghton will each get $28,001.32. The county’s only active adult-use business is Northern Specialty Health in Houghton. Two more — one by The Fire Station, one by Lume — are being built nearby.

“The revenue generated from marijuana taxes and fees is important to our local governments,” State Treasurer Rachael Eubanks said in a press release. “In this extraordinary time, our staff is working to get those payments to impacted municipalities and counties. Every dollar helps right now.”

In total, more than $341 million in adult-use marijuana sales was reported for fiscal year 2020.

For the state of Michigan’s 2020 fiscal year, more than $31 million was collected from the 10% adult-use marijuana excise tax. Combined with fees, there was a total of $45.7 million available for distribution from the fund.

Aside from the nearly $10 million in disbursements to municipalities and counties, around $11.6 million will be sent to the School Aid Fund for K-12 education and another $11.6 million to the Michigan Transportation Fund, upon appropriation. The remaining $12.5 million amount will be used toward start-up and administrative costs.

The fund’s first priority for allocation is to pay for implementation, administration enforcement of the state act establishing it. For the first two years of its existence, it will also pay $20 million or more for clinical trials of marijuana’s effectiveness in treating conditions of U.S. military veterans and preventing veteran suicide.
