MSP: Condition of woman injured in officer-involved shooting is improving

HUBBELL — A woman who was shot by police during an incident in Hubbell on April 12 is no longer in critical condition at a Green Bay, Wisconsin, hospital as of Monday, a Michigan State Police spokesperson said.

Lt. Mark Giannunzio, public information officer for the Michigan State Police’s Eighth District, said the woman was transferred to the regular care unit at the hospital and her condition is improving.

The Michigan State Police and Houghton County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of shots fired at a house in Hubbell around 9:15 p.m. April 12, the MSP said. Officers found a 28-year-old woman outside believed to be armed.

Video taken by a bystander and posted online showed the woman yelling “Shoot me!” as police ordered her to drop a gun, the Houghton Daily Mining Gazette reported. She was shot as she turned to re-enter the house.

An MSP news release indicated police had feared for the safety of an elderly woman in the house.

Officers performed first aid until EMS could arrive on the scene, the MSP said.

The woman’s name has not been released.

Giannunzio said the investigation into the incident continues.
