Search continues for missing child

ONTONAGON — The search for a missing 17-year-old in Ontonagon County continued Monday, three days after he wandered off from home.

Cam Besonen was reported missing late Friday afternoon. Search operations continued Monday with nearly 100 volunteers and 30 law enforcement personnel, the Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office said in a release. Bad weather limited air searches Monday.

Besonen was last seen around 5:45 p.m. Friday at his home in Haight Township. He is autistic and non-verbal. He does not have a sense of direction or how to yell for help, his mother, Jill Keeley-Besonen, said in a Facebook post. When last seen, he was wearing a blue jacket and light blue jeans.

Since Besonen’s disappearance, more than 400 volunteers and 40 law enforcement personnel from local, state, tribal and federal agencies have taken part in the search, the sheriff’s office said. Air search operators have included the local Houghton wing of the Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard from Traverse City and a Michigan State Police helicopter from Lansing.

As of 3:30 p.m. Monday, volunteers were still being encouraged to sign up at the Maple Grove Hall in Paulding, according to the South Ontonagon County Facebook page.
