FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP — A suspect is in custody after a fatal shooting at a home in Franklin Township Monday afternoon.

Michigan State Police Calumet Post troopers and members of the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office responded about 2:20 p.m. to a reported shooting. They found a 38-year-old woman dead at the scene. Members of the 8th District Special Investigations Section and the MSP Marquette Crime Lab also responded to the scene.

Preliminary investigation led to the arrest of an 18-year-old man. The arrest occurred within several hours, Giannunzio said. The man was lodged in the Houghton County Jail awaiting arraignment as of Tuesday afternoon.

The name of the suspect was being withheld pending arraignment, which is expected as soon as Wednesday. The name of the deceased woman has not been released pending notification of family.

Giannunzio did not comment on the relationship between the alleged shooter and victim. Both are from the area, he said.

The homicide remains under investigation.
